AbstractDomestic refrigerators increasingly rely on electronic controls that report faults through error codes, and technicians often treat the displayed code as a diagnosis. The research gap is the absence of an analysis explaining, from the standpoint of field repair, what an onboard code can and cannot establish about a sealed refrigeration system. The objective is to determine the diagnostic limits of onboard error codes in domestic refrigeration equipment and to substantiate a procedure that links the code to a root cause. The methodology combines a structured review of 24 peer-reviewed studies, regulatory documents and standards published, a content analysis of diagnostic logic, and a documented case from the author’s field practice in Florida. The results show that codes confirm a deviation in a monitored variable but not the failed component, and that published experiments report overlapping signatures for leaks, restrictions, airflow faults and compressor degradation. A four-class code taxonomy and a three-domain verification protocol are proposed. The conclusions will interest service technicians, appliance manufacturers, trainers and repair policy specialists.
